Course Catalog & Schedule Rules

Please note course sections are created from the course catalogexternal link symbol.  To offer a new course, it must be approved via a New Course Form pdf before a section can be created.   Additionally, please note that if Human Resources has not entered an instructor into the system, we are unable to attach that instructor to a course. 

 


General Course Information

New and Updating Current Courses

If you would like to request to add or reactivate a course, or if you want to make any changes to a current course, please complete a New Course Form pdf and submit it with the appropriate signatures, including that of the dean of the school.

Inactive Courses

If a course is inactive, please indicate “inactive." Courses that have not been offered for the past 4 years (since Fall 2003) and will not be offered in the future should be identified as inactive. To reactivate a course, please complete a New Course Form and submit with appropriate signatures.  Due to the required amount of work to re-activate a course, please be sure to only inactive courses that will not be offered again. 

Special Topics Courses

Each course name and number has one course description. For Special Topics courses, you may want to state, “Topics may vary. Please consult with the department for additional information” for the course description. You may also include a URL, which will allow interested students to access your web site directly from the on-line course descriptions that are posted in the online GA and schedule. Please note that we can tailor individual short titles for each course section in the schedule of course offerings.

Distribution Credit

Please note: As part of the annual distribution credit roll-call in March 2007, the Office of the Registrar requested of each academic dean’s office their proposed distribution credit designations for the 2007-2008 academic year. Distribution credit for 2007-2008 was then assigned accordingly.  Departments will be receiving distribution credit memos in the near future for the 2008-2009 academic year.

GA data is stored in Banner in plain text format. Therefore, we are unable to apply italics, bold, bullets, specific fonts, special characters, or accents. The Publications Office may apply text formatting.

Permission Required

To require permission during ESTHER registration enrollment caps will be set to 0. If a course is listed as Instructor Permission Required or Department Permission Required, the course will require instructor or department permission prior to registration. Students must submit a Special Registration form to add these classes.

 

 

Cross-listed Courses

Courses which are cross-listed and offered Spring 2008 (ANTH/LING 200); does not include equivalencies (i.e. LING 200/400).

Part of Term

Three options exist for this section “Full Term”, “1st Term”, and “2nd Term” (excluding Jones School and MLS).  All sections default to “Full Term” unless indicated otherwise.

 

 

Grade Mode

Standard indicates letter grades (default). Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory indicates S/U grading; for graduate level and non-graded lab courses only. Grade mode cannot vary between sections of a course.

Cross-Listed and Equivalent Courses

Cross-Listed Courses

 

Curricular Requirements:

Cross-listed courses must have the exact same curricula and course requirements. Therefore, they cannot be taught at different student levels (undergraduate, graduate, etc.) or course levels (100, 200, 300, 400, etc.).

Shared Attributes:

Cross-listed courses must share a course title, credit hours, description, student level, meeting time and days, instructor, classroom, registration restrictions, recommendations, grade mode, repeatability, and distribution credit.

Example:

An example of cross-listed courses is ANTH 200 and LING 200.

Student Restrictions:

If a student takes more than one course that is part of the same cross-listing in the same semester, that student cannot receive credit for more than one of the courses.

Course Schedule Implications:

If one course in a cross-listing is offered, all courses in the cross-listing must be offered.

Course Enrollments:

The maximum enrollment for cross-listed courses may be different, but maximum enrollment for any cross-listed course cannot equal or exceed the maximum for the group of cross-listed courses. For example, the maximum enrollment for a group of cross-listed courses is 30. Therefore, one of the courses may have a maximum enrollment of 20, and the other may have a maximum enrollment of 10.

Course Roster Implications:

Course rosters for cross-listed courses are combined.

Equivalent Courses

 

Curricular Requirements:

Equivalent courses do not have the exact same curricula and course requirements. They may be taught at different course levels (100, 200, 300, 400, etc.).

Shared Attributes:

Equivalent courses may share a course title, credit hours, description, student level, meeting time and days, instructor, classroom, registration restrictions, recommendations, grade mode, repeatability, and distribution credit.

Example:

An example of equivalent courses is HIST 279 and HIST 379.

Student Restrictions:

If a student takes more than one course that is part of an equivalency in the same semester, that student cannot receive credit for more than one of the courses.

Course Schedule Implications:

If one course in an equivalency is offered, not all courses in an equivalency need to be offered.

Course Enrollments:

The maximum enrollments for equivalent courses are not connected so they can be different.

Course Roster Implications:

Course rosters for equivalent courses are not combined.

Graduate/Undergraduate (GR/UG) Equivalent Courses

 

Curricular Requirements:

GR/UG equivalent courses do not have the exact same curricula and course requirements. They are taught at different student levels (undergraduate, graduate, etc.).

Shared Attributes:

GR/UG equivalent courses may share a meeting time and days, instructor, classroom.

Example:

An example of equivalent courses is ANTH 200 and ANTH 500.

Student Restrictions:

If a student takes more than one course that is part of a GR/UG equivalency in the same semester, that student cannot receive credit for more than one of the courses.

Course Schedule Implications:

If one course in a GR/UG equivalency is offered, not all courses in a GR/UG equivalency need to be offered.

Course Enrollments:

The maximum enrollments for GR/UG equivalent courses are not connected so they can be different.

Course Roster Implications:

Course rosters for GR/UG equivalent courses are not combined.

Registration Restrictions

  • In order for registration restrictions to apply to an offering of a course (section), the restrictions must be applied to the course at the course level not the section level. When changing or adding a course, restrictions must be included on the New Course Form.
  • Please note that if a registration restriction is listed, Esther registration may not be available. Students may submit a Special Registration Form to enroll in the course; approval signatures are required.
