Catalog and Schedule Definitions

Catalog: Refers to the listing of courses that are active in the Office of Registrar’s database, regardless of whether or not they are being offered in a particular semester. The General Announcementsexternal_link are a printed snapshot of catalog data.

Schedule
: A listing of all courses being offered in a particular semester. A course cannot be offered unless it has been created and activated in the catalog.

Associated Courses: If the course has an association, or a change to an association, please identify if the association is to be added or deleted, the course name and number (ex: LING 200) and the type of association. Associations include pre-requisites, co-requisites, cross-lists, equivalents, etc.
Corequisite(s): Co-registration is required for registration. Will prevent registration if co-requisite is not first added to student’s schedule. 
Course Approval: Appropriate signatures verify course approval. These fields are required.
Course Name and #: Key information upon which all other course information is based.  Course numbers may not be reused. Example: ENGL 101. This field is required.
Course Information: Identifies course catalog /General Announcement information.
Credit Hours: Credit hours for a course can be a single value or a range; example 3 or 1 to 6. The credit hour for a course is set at the catalog level and cannot vary for individual sections. This field is required.
Cross-List: Cross-listed courses share title, credit, description, meeting time and days, pre and co requisite, permission required, recommendation, registration restrictions, grade mode, instructor, repeatability, and distributions. Students cannot receive credit for both courses taken the same semester. (EX: LING 300 and ANTH 300).
Department: The course department. Example: English Department for ENGL 101.
Description: Describes the course content; limited to 50 words or less.
Distribution Credit: Distribution credit must be approved by the dean. Three options for distribution credit include: D1, D2 and D3. Distribution credit does not follow courses whose number has changed without explicit approval of the dean.
Equivalency: The course shares attributes up to the level of cross-listing, but differs in one or more attributes; students cannot receive credit for both courses taken the same semester. (Ex: HIST 279 and HIST 379).
Format: This information is stored in Banner and used to classify course offerings. This information will not appear in course catalog or course offering postings, but will be used in reports. Format not indicated will default to lecture.
Lecture: Primary instructor gives instruction.
Seminar: May involve many guest speakers; high level of student interaction in topic discussions.
Lab: Primarily in the sciences; hands on practice of topics.
Lect/Lab: Lecture course with a lab component included.
Studio: Primarily for the arts; hands on practice.
Ind Study: Individual instruction with guidance of faculty; may be private instruction.
Research: Primarily used at the graduate level for students working on their thesis or dissertation.
     
Grade Mode: Standard grade mode indicates letter grading (A-F); Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grade mode indicates S/U grading and is for graduate courses only. Grade modes not indicated will default to standard.
Graduate/Undergraduate Equivalency: The course shares attributes up to the level of cross-listing, but offered at different levels (graduate and undergraduate); students cannot receive credit for both courses taken the same semester. (Ex: LING 300 and LING 500). Must be in the same department.
Instructor (Course Information or Catalog): This information appears in the catalog/GA only.
Instructor (Meeting Information or Section): Identifies the instructor teaching the section. May vary across sections.
Limited Enrollment (Catalog): This information appears in the GA only. Identifies if enrollment is limited for the course at the catalog level; this field is optional. Does not prohibit enrollment. 
Prerequisite(s): Completion of the prerequisite is required for registration.
Primarily Intended for: This field is optional and for department use only.
Recommended: Checking recommended identifies the request as a recommendation; registration will not be affected.
Registration Permission Required: This field will default to Permission Not Required. Selecting Department or Instructor will result in a closed enrollment for the section (enrollment cap=0); a Special Registration form will be required for registration thereby requiring permission. Does not prohibit registration. 
Repeatable for Credit: This field will default to not repeatable. However, if repeatable is selected, the repeat value will default to 98 times unless the number of times the course is repeatable is indicated.
Title (long): Appears in the online Course Catalog and GA only. Long title may exceed 30 characters.
Title (short): Limited to 30 characters (including spaces and punctuation). The short title appears in the printed and on-line schedule and on transcripts. This field is required.
URL (Course Information or Catalog): Used to identify the course URL which applies to all section of the course. This URL will appear in the GA; the course URL allows interested parties to learn more about the course.

Schedule Key Term Definitions


Enrollment Limit (Meeting Information or Section): Applicable to the section only; identifies the enrollment limit placed on the course. Enrollment limit defaults to 20 unless otherwise specified.  Prohibits registration once the max is reached.
To be offered: Please indicate the term and the year the course will be initially offered.
URL (Meeting Information or Section): Used to identify the section URL which applies to a specific section of the course. This URL will appear in the on-line Course Offering Schedule and on student’s Esther accounts. The section URL allows students to view information like the syllabus and assignments on-line.
Meeting Days/Times: Indicates the day and time the course section will meet.
Meeting Information: Identifies the course section or meeting information.
Part of Term: 1 indicates the course meets for the regular full term; all course offerings default to 1 unless otherwise indicated. 1st  indicates the course meets for the first half of the term, 2nd indicates the course meets for the second half of the term. LNG indicates the course meets for a special session for languages only. Other parts of term are department specific primarily the Jones School and MLS programs.
