Add/Drop
Students have the option of adding and/or dropping courses after the academic year has begun. Please refer to the academic calendar for important deadlines.
You may need to download and print the appropriate Special Registration Form (Undergraduate
or Graduate
).
Designate a Course as Pass/Fail
- Go to the Online Pass/Fail Designation and Conversion page.
- Select Designation or Conversion
- Login through the CAS authentication page and verify your personal information
- Indicate correct course and CRN
- Click Submit
You will receive email confirmation when your request is successfully processed. If your request could not be processed, you will receive an email indicating the reason your request was not completed.
Courses with Prerequisites
In order to register for a course that has a prerequisite which you have not completed, you will either need to take the prerequisites before registering, or obtain permission from the instructor.
To register for courses which have prerequisites:
- Download and print the Special Registration Form (Undergraduate
or Graduate
).
- Fill out the form, and have the instructor sign the form.
- Turn in the completed form to the Office of the Registrar.
Overlapping or Double-Booked Courses
In order to register for more than one class which meets at this same day/time, you will need the approval of the instructors of each class.
To register for Overlapped or Double-Booked Courses:
- Download and print the Overlapping or Double-Booked Registration Form
.
- Fill out the form, and have the instructors approve and sign the form.
- Turn in the completed form to the Office of the Registrar.
Courses which require the permission of the instructor
You will need the permission of the instructor to register for a course if:
- the course is full
- you are attempting to register after the 2nd week of classes
- for policy reasons, the instructor requires his or her approval prior to admitting a student to the course
To register for a course requiring the instructor's permission:
- Download and print the appropriate Special Registration Request Form (Undergraduate
or Graduate
).
- Have your instructor sign the form and check the appropriate box
- Turn in the completed form to the Office of the Registrar.
Variable Credit Courses
Through the 2nd Week of Registration:
- You do not need to come to the Office of the Registrar. When you registered for the course, it defaulted to the lowest applicable credit hours for that course.
- If you need to adjust those hours, you can do so through ESTHER
. You will find the Adjust Variable Course Hours option on the Register or Add/Drop Classes page, in the Registration section.
Past the 2nd week of registration:
- Undergraduate students: A petition must be submitted to the Committee on Examinations and Standing, care of the Dean of Undergraduates at ugdean@rice.edu.
- Graduate students: Obtain the appropriate form from your academic department and appeal for a late change to the Dean of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies.
Audit a Course
Students have the option of auditing courses. Audited courses will be noted on your transcript with a grade of either "AUD" or "NC" (No Credit). There are no credit hours associated with audited courses and auditing a course does not affect your GPA.
- Download and print the appropriate Special Registration Request Form (Undergraduate
or Graduate
).
- Have your instructor sign the form and check the box for Audit.
- Turn in the completed form to the Office of the Registrar before the end of the 2nd week of the semester.
