Graduation is the culmination of a student's undergraduate career at Rice University. Information about how to prepare during your senior year for this important event can be found under the
Preparing for Graduation tab on the left, while information regarding the spring Commencement ceremony is available via the
link. Instructions for obtaining your diploma or ordering a replacement diploma can be found under the
Diploma Information tab.
Important things to remember about graduation:
- Degrees are conferred three times a year, in December, May, and August.
- Commencement ceremonies are held once a year, in May.
- The 103rd Commencement will be held May 13 - 14, 2016.
August 2016 Conferral
The President, Provost and Faculty Senate have created a new end-of-summer degree conferral scheduled for August 2016. Thus, if you can complete your degree requirements by August 19, you will be eligible for consideration for degree conferral on August 31, 2016. Please note, if you are completing your requirements elsewhere, the official transcript will need to be received in the Office of the Registrar by August 19 as well.
If you plan on graduating in August 2016, you will need to apply for graduation. To do so, please log into ESTHER, complete and submit the Application for Degree form on or before Thursday, June 30th, 2016. If you plan on graduating at a later date, you will still need to apply via the Application for Degree form as soon as you know your plans so that we can know when you plan to complete all degree requirements.
Studying Abroad During Your Senior Year
The Office of International Programs, along with the Office of the Registrar, strongly discourage students from completing degree requirements while participating in a study abroad program during the final semester of their senior year.
However, should students choose to complete degree requirements while abroad in the Spring, it should be noted that their degree will not be conferred until the following December. Likewise, if students choose to complete degree requirements while abroad in the Fall, their degree will not be conferred until the following May.
