ATTENTION: Spring (May) 2025 Undergraduate Degree Candidates

As noted in the General Announcements, university graduation requirements state that students should “complete all Rice coursework that satisfies major, minor and/or certificate requirements (as designated by the department or program) with the standard letter grade earned (not on a Pass/Fail basis).**”

Please pay particular attention to the important footnote on Pass/Fail courses.

➡️ You are receiving this email because i) you are a declared May 2025 degree candidate, and ii) a review of your (Degree Works) degree audit (on Day One of the Spring 2025 semester) identified a graduation deficiency in your major, minor, or certificate due to a course with a grade of “P”.

As part of May 2025 graduation preparation and processing, please be advised that grades of “P” in these required courses will be (or have been) uncovered to the actual letter grade earned. A grade of "P" will not be restored unless a clear path to clearing the deficiency is identified by the end of the 2nd week of the Spring 2025 semester. If for some reason you have not already done so, please immediately review your Degree Works degree audit. Below are listed circumstances that could have an impact on the action taken:

Course Substitutions

If the advisor for your major, minor, or certificate has agreed to allow another course to be used as a substitution for the course with the grade of “P”, please contact your advisor and the Official Certifier to request that the petition for the course substitution be submitted in Degree Works immediately. In these circumstances, please additionally notify the Office of the Registrar.

Dropping a Major, Minor, or Certificate
If you plan to drop the major, minor, or certificate so that the grade of “P” will not (or did not) need to be uncovered, please immediately complete the necessary Declaration/Change Form indicating that you are dropping the program. Please submit this form to the Office of the Registrar immediately, and no later than this Friday, January 24, 2025.

Repeated Course

If for some reason you are repeating the course in question during the Spring 2025 semester, please immediately contact us to advise us of this. We will mark the first completed instance of the course as repeated (which will cause the “in-progress” enrollment of the course to be captured in Degree Works.)
Please Note: If during the semester you later decide to drop the course, you must notify the Office of the Registrar immediately to advise us that you are dropping it so that credit can be restored to the first instance of the course.

For additional information on the Pass/Fail Option or on the university's Graduation Requirements, please reference the General Announcements or contact us in the Office of the Registrar.

Thank you.
