RE: Final Grades, Faculty Grading Guidelines, and Grade Changes

As noted in the Fall 2024 Academic Calendar, the Final Exam period for the Fall 2024 semester begins today. You are likely in the process of calculating and preparing your final grades for submission in ESTHER.

As students see their earned grades, some of them may be prompted to approach you with questions. As noted in the Faculty Grading Guidelines, "instructors should be willing to give any student an explanation of their grade as consistent with the grading for the rest of the class.”  In some instances, students may ask or even pressure you to change their final grade. Please remember that:

  • Instructors may not change a semester grade after the grade has been submitted to the Office of the Registrar, except when there is a clerical error in calculating the grade. This is a long-standing university rule of which the faculty are reminded by the registrar at the end of each semester. It is designed, in part, to protect the faculty from student pressure for grade changes.

Note: For helpful information on the electronic Grade Change Request process, including step-by-step instructions within ESTHER, please click here. For information on Temporary Grades (INC, OT), when it is appropriate to give an INC grade, and what the necessary requirements are, please click here.

Thank you ...
