FERPA Training and Assessment
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
The purpose of this online training is to provide basic FERPA training to Rice University faculty and staff. University members with access to any kind of student information are expected to know and understand the basic governing principles of FERPA and adhere to them.
University members who wish to request and maintain access to a specific group of student records (e.g. residential college, department, major advisors) must first complete this online FERPA training and brief quiz at least once every two years. A score of 70% (7 out of 10) is required to gain access to student education records. If you do not score 70% (7 out of 10) or better, you will be required to re-take the training and quiz prior to being granted access to education records.
Upon completion of the course, you will be able to print a certificate which you can show to supervisors or other who need to know that you've completed the training. You do not need to send this to the Office of the Registrar.
What you can expect from this training:
- An understanding of why FERPA compliance is important.
- An understanding of how to appropriately handle student records information.
- An understanding of your responsibilities under FERPA.
If you have been asked by an OTR staff member to complete FERPA training for a security agreement or because your training is outside of two years, please click here to directly access the course since you are already enrolled.
