Common Registration Errors

Error Message What it Means What You Should Do
Academic School Restriction Course is restricted to students in a specific academic school (e.g., Natural Sciences), and the student is not listed in the required school for enrollment in the course. Email the instructor/department responsible for the course. If approved, obtain permission from the instructor via the Special Registration Form (Undergraduate or Graduate).
Classification Restriction Course is restricted to specific student classifications (e.g. FR, SO, JR, SR), and the student's classification does not match the required classification for the course Email the instructor/department responsible for the course. If approved, obtain permission from the instructor via the Special Registration Form (Undergraduate or Graduate).
Closed Section You have attempted to register for a course which is unavailable. Check enrollment counts and/or determine if instructor permission is required prior to registering for this course.
Cohort The course is restricted to students who matriculated during specific academic years. Email the instructor/department responsible for the course. If approved, obtain permission from the instructor via the Special Registration Form (Undergraduate or Graduate).
CORQ_CHEM 124 Req This course has a co-requisite course that you have not yet registered for. You must also register for the corequisite course indicated. (In this case CHEM 124.)
Course is not available for registration at this time. You have attempted to register for a course which has restricted admittance to certain students. Consult the Course Schedule for more information regarding these restrictions.
Degree Restriction Course is restricted to students in a specific degree program (e.g., Doctor of Philosophy), and the student is not listed in the degree program for enrollment in the course. Email the instructor/department responsible for the course. If approved, obtain permission from the instructor via the Special Registration Form (Undergraduate or Graduate).
Department Restriction Course requires the permission of department. Email the instructor/department responsible for the course. If approved, obtain permission from the instructor via the Special Registration Form (Undergraduate or Graduate).
Duplicate CRN You have attempted to register for the same CRN twice. Check to make sure you have entered the correct CRN(s).
DUPL CRSE with SEC-22869 You have attempted to register multiple sections of the same course. Check to make sure you have registered for the correct course(s).
Level Restriction Course is restricted to a specific academic level (Undergraduate or Graduate). If the course is not offered at your academic level, email the instructor/department responsible for the course. If approved, obtain permission from the instructor via the Special Registration Form (Undergraduate or Graduate).
Major/Minor/Field of Study Restriction Course is restricted to students in a specific major/minor, and the student is not listed in the required major/minor for enrollment in the course. You may do any of the following course of action: Select another section that is not restricted outside of your major; declare your major in that field; or, obtain a major restriction override from the instructor via the Special Registration Form (Undergraduate or Graduate).
Maximum Hours Exceeded You have attempted to register for more hours than you are approved to take. Reduce your course load. Continuing students may petition the Office of Academic Advising to increase your course load. (New matriculants not eligible.)
Mutually Exclusive Previously earned credit prohibits registration. The content of the course that you are attempting to register for is too similar to a course you have already taken or earned credit for. Email the instructor/department responsible for the course. If approved, obtain permission from the instructor via the Special Registration Form (Undergraduate or Graduate).
Prerequisite and Test Score This course has a pre-requisite that you have not yet completed. You must take the pre-requisite before registering for this class, or obtain permission from the instructor via the Special Registration Form (Undergraduate or Graduate).
Program Restriction Course is restricted to students in a specific program (e.g., Doctor of Philosophy in Business), and the student is not listed in the required program for enrollment in the course. Email the instructor/department responsible for the course. If approved, obtain permission from the instructor via the Special Registration Form (Undergraduate or Graduate).
Registration changes are not allowed. Course status dates not within range for part of term. You have attempted to add/drop a course that has a restricted add/drop window. Consult with the department that administers the course. For example, Management course conflicts should be directed to the Jones School.
Repeat Acknowledgment You have registered a course over the allowed repeat limit; no additional credit will be earned - the attempt with the highest grade will receive credit. To register, the student must complete the Special Registration Form (Undergraduate or Graduate) and acknowledge that the course is being repeated and cannot earn additional credit.
Reserved Closed You have attempted to register for a course that is full, and has a waitlist which is at capacity. Check enrollment counts and/or determine if instructor permission is required prior to registering for this course.
Residential Restriction Course is restricted to students in a specific college, and the student is not listed in the required college for enrollment in the course. Email the instructor/department responsible for the course. If approved, obtain permission from the instructor via the Special Registration Form (Undergraduate or Graduate).
Time conflict with [CRN] You have attempted to enroll in a class which has a time conflict with another of your classes. ESTHER does not allow simultaneous enrollment in classes with overlapping meeting times (such as a Mon/Wed/Fri 1:00-1:50 class and a Mon 1:00-4:00 class) or double-booking (registering for two classes which meet at the same time). You must drop the conflicting class before being able to register for the other. If you have a legitimate reason to enroll in overlapping or double-booked classes, you must complete a Special Registration Form (Undergraduate or Graduate) and obtain the signatures of the instructors of all classes involved in the time conflict.
Too Many Attempts / Maximum Number of Attempts There is a maximum number of attempts to register via ESTHER per term. When this limit has been reached due to repeated and excessive CRN submissions, your account becomes locked and you are prevented from registering through the online self-service feature.
