Credit by Departmental Exam

Acceptance Policy: Credit by Departmental Exam

In certain and very specific situations, Rice University allows for credit by departmental exam. At present there is one Credit by Departmental Exam arrangement established and approved for new, incoming undergraduate-level Rice degree-seeking students.

MATH 105 – AP/OTH CREDIT IN CALCULUS I

The exam will be open to all entering first-year students who believe they have mastery of the MATH 101 material but do not have credit for MATH 101 or MATH 105. Please Note: this exam is not intended for incoming students who took the AP Calculus exam and scored a 3 or below. This exam is intended for those that have studied calculus in depth but have not had the opportunity or access to take the AP, IB or A-Levels exam. Entering first-year students may take the department-administered exam only once, during orientation (O-Week). Continuing students who have previously matriculated at Rice are not eligible to take the exam.

Upon successful completion and an appropriate passing score on the exam, MATH 105 credit will be added to the student’s transcript. Students with MATH 105 credit are not able to register for MATH 101, and they are expected to register for the next MATH course in their plan of study.

For more information on the MATH 105 credit by departmental exam, please contact the Math department.

Receiving Credit by Departmental Exam

The MATH 105 Credit by Departmental Exam is administered by the Mathematics department, who will coordinate with the Office of the Registrar on the awarding and granting of MATH 105 credit.
