Midterm/Mid-Semester Grades for First-Year Undergraduate and First-Year Transfer Students

The collection of mid-semester grades is a valuable tool for monitoring the successful academic progress of all new undergraduates, and mid-term grades only apply to first-year undergraduate and first-year transfer students.

General Information

Midterm grades help you gauge your academic progress halfway through the semester and serve as an indicator of your academic performance in a class.

The grades received are not recorded permanently and will not appear on your transcript. They are purely informational. A student should use their mid-term grade as important and helpful feedback.

Please note that if you have received a grade of NG, that means a grade was not reported by your instructor, and you should contact your instructor regarding progress in the class.

You are strongly encouraged to get in touch with your instructor(s) if:

  • You have concerns about your midterm grades
  • There is no midterm grade for your class (or the NG grade is displayed)

If you feel that you could be doing better academically, discuss this with your course instructors or seek help from the Office of Academic Advising (aadv@rice.edu or 713-348-4060).

Entering Midterm Grades (Instructors)

The process for entering midterm grades is nearly identical to entering final grades. When entering midterm grades, please be sure to select the midterm roster, otherwise, you will incorrectly be entering final grades for students, and this will create complications for you at the end of the semester.

It is strongly recommended that you use Chrome or Firefox when entering grades.

  1. Login to ESTHER.
Go to Faculty Services > Grade Entry.
  2. Select a term and the midterm grade entry roster.
  3. Enter the course CRN, which can be found on the email you received from the Office of the Registrar near the middle of the semester.
  4. Enter the Grade Entry PIN, which can also be found on the email you received from the Office of the Registrar near the middle of the semester. Note: The Grade Entry PIN is case-sensitive. Additionally, all characters in the PIN are letters--no numbers are used.

If you do not enter a midterm grade by the date established on the academic calendar, the Office of the Registrar will enter the grade of NG. No late midterm grades are accepted, and changes to midterm grades are not made once submitted by the instructor (or initially processed to NG for failure to submit a grade).
