Preferred First Name FAQs

When will my preferred first name appear in the university system?

Once a student has updated their preferred first name in ESTHER, that preferred first name will be reflected immediately in ESTHER reports such as course rosters, grade rosters, etc. Updates to the campus directory, Canvas, Degree Works, and Navigate require a 24-hour period.

Who can choose or change a preferred first name?

Only you as a Rice student can choose or change your own preferred first name on your ESTHER account.

Can I change my email address to better match my preferred first name?

Yes. You can update your email alias to include your preferred first name. More information on updating your email alias can be found at Creating an Email Alias (also known as Vanity Email).

May I specify a preferred middle or last name?

Preferred names pertain to your preferred first name only.

Can I put anything as my preferred first name?

Your preferred name should be the name that you use in social interactions. It should be a name that you want your professors and fellow students to call you. Please note that the university reserves the right to remove any preferred first name that is deemed to be inappropriate, derogatory or misrepresentative.

Can I change the preferred first name I’ve chosen?

Yes. You can change or delete your preferred first name at any time. Step by step instructions on how to change your preferred first name can be found at Updating Personal information.

Will my preferred first name appear on all Rice records?

Not all. The preferred first name will appear in ESTHER reports such as course rosters, waitlist rosters, grade rosters, Canvas, Degree Works, Navigate, the online directory, and Rice University ID Cards. As part of the graduation application process (the application for degree), students are able to submit their preferred diploma name to be printed on their Rice University Diploma.

Does a preferred first name affect my legal name?

No, electing to use a preferred first name will not change your legal name.

I’ve very recently changed my preferred first name in ESTHER, and I want to get a new Rice ID card with my updated preferred first name. How do I do that?

If you would like a new Rice ID with your recently updated preferred first name on it, you can stop by the RUPD office and pay A $15 card replacement fee to get a new, replacement ID Card.

Do I have to have my preferred first name on my Rice ID Card?

Yes. If you indicated a preferred first name, that is the name that will appear on the front of your Rice ID card.

Is choosing a preferred name the same as legally changing my name?

No. In order to legally change your name, students will have to supply supporting legal documentation of their name change and complete the Biographical and Demographical Update Form.
